You see the same in the playoffs when he was elevated in the lineup during key injuries.
I don't advocate signing him, mind you. He's said that if he doesn't sign with Detroit, he wants to sign with a strong team. The only way the Flames will get him is by overpaying and he's not a consistent scorer.
I think players like him who have been developed in Detroit would be valuable for any team. You can just see in their game that they know where to be and what to do on the ice.
Filppula also tends to start his seasons very cold and suffered an injury during the lockout. I don't think he got going at all last season. But he's going to be looking for a contract that most people will see as too much for the level of consistent production one would like to see for the money.
I feel that he's going to stay in Detroit after all. At least that's my best guess.

While they may have been developed in Detroit the game was so much simpler for them to play with Lidstrom on the ice controlling the game for half the game.
Are there Red Wings Alumni through out the league that went on to play as good or better than they did with Detroit... Leino...for instance flopped leaving Detroit...
They have a bunch of guys that they reclaimed... Cleary, Draper,Maltby, Bertuzzi (kept his career going), but I can't think of someone who was okay in Detroit going on to play great somewhere else.
