When I think of a rebuilding trade, I think of trading a contract like Tanguay for draft picks or trading Sarich at the deadline for a marginal pick (which he likely would have gotten for us this upcoming deadline). Not really trading off a player at their lowest value.
I actually don't understand what the trade accomplishes. We got younger, yes, but we also got worse in terms of talent, we actually gave up some character in terms of Sarich for a complete doofus in SOB and we took money back.
Is it a bad trade? Not really. Does it help the 'rebuild'? Doubtful, and it might set us back a bit.

Salary is a wash, $6 million either way. SOB is on a year longer than Sarich but is on a cheaper deal and will be a better player that anything we could likely get at his cap hit.
The trade accomplishes a couple of things, it moves more of the old guard out, it brings in some hungrier, younger players, it brings in more jam (alot more jam considering Tanguay had none and Sarich was a part time player) and it fills the roster out with warm, competitive bodies.
From a rebuilding team standpoint we needed a couple of things, we needed size and toughness to play alongside alot of the youngsters, Jones and SOB bring that. We bring in a RW which we desperately needed, we have more balance through forward now. We bring in a 6th D who I think will actually be a really good mentor, in the Marchment style. This move was made moreso to build new chemistry on the team, that's why I like it from a rebuilding standpoint.
On salary again, it doesn't matter, the window to contending will open when Jones' contract has wound down. We still need to get to the cap floor as well and I'd rather take on some trades for younger, expensive, reclamation projects that can buy into a rebuilding team mindset than some more journeyman UFAs riding out their last big paycheque. Huge difference.
And Tanguay's contract was also terrible, and he was the definition of "post-apex" not the kind of guy you want for a rebuild.
Should we have trade Tanguay for picks? Maybe. Highly doubtful he brings in anything more than a 2nd rounder and a salary dump coming back if he gets off to a good start. No team would have given anything good for Tanguay. I'd rather the chemistry change that these players bring.
