Gillis didn't realize the climate that he was in, nor the climate that was about to get worse.
There may have been a small window available where Toronto would have bitten in fact. But that didn't last long, especially with the Burke firing...
And from there I think all potential trading partner(s) if there was in fact more, smartened up and quickly that A) not only was the asking price for him too high but more importantly B) taking on this guy's salary at almost any cost just didn't make sense.
Fast forward the season and the above climate got even worse, to the point where the situation has been red taped with *DO NOT TOUCH*.
The buy outs going on right now (especially Bryz in this case) are even more cold water in the face of teams. There's no way anyone takes on Luongo now, they've seen first hand the atrocious fallout.
Abomination.
