One man cannot make the difference over the long-run. GAA is a team stat, not a goalie stat. Sometimes a guy can drag a team kicking a screaming to mediocre success, and sometimes they do all they can to keep things steady. Every once in a while they can throw a team on their back and take them all the way. Kipper has done all three of these things.
Not only is he the best Flames goalie ever, I consider him to be one of the greatest period, if we're talking about goaltending ability and not just numbers.
Is it really a surprise that a goaltender would show more solid stats with a defensive team in front of him?
