At least one of the advanced stats bloggers has run the numbers on Vigneault's zone-start system. He reports that most or all of the advantage you gain by starting your best line in the attacking zone is lost right back because you make it much easier for the opposing coach to match lines against you. I can't find the detailed report at the moment, but David Johnson at hockeyanalysis.com concurs:
