The day Trudeau announced the NEP, and bankrupted thousands of families in this city was. I will never forget the day I came home from grade 1 and my dad was crying with his face buried in his hands saying to my mom "What will we do? What will we do?" over and over. They had just bought a massive $350,000 house (in 1980 dollars, it equivalent to about 1.5 million now) 2 months earlier, and it just less than halved in value, and my dads entire company was laid off along with almost every other engineer in this city. Half my friends moved away, or moved to other parts of the City as everyone downgraded, and I never saw most of them ever again.

My dad had 2 friends kill them selves they were so financially devastated, and families were torn apart over the stress of fathers losing their jobs, as it was still very uncommon for wives to be bread winners back then. My dad was reduced from being one of the most brilliant engineers in his field, to a Handyman fixing toilets for 3 years, and we lost everything, and their was no insurance to bail you out.

We will recover from this for the better part in months, the NEP took the better part of a decade for this city to recover from as it wasn't until the mid-late 80's that things really started getting back on track, from what was essentially Alberta being robbed out of jealousy and spite from the East.
