The Emergency Operations Centre has been activated as the City of Medicine Hat prepares for record flood levels. Alberta Environment has advised of this morning that the expected flow of the South Saskatchewan River will reach 6,000 cubic meters pe...r second by 6 p.m. Saturday June 22, 2013. This is 600 c/m/s higher than 1995.
Protection of life and the safety of residents is the number one priority. A Local State of Emergency will be declared as of 1 p.m. today.
There will be flooding in low lying areas, road closures will occur and a strong possibility exists for water flowing over some bridges. Details of affected areas will be provided as soon as possible.
Sandbags and tiger dams are currently being strategically located by city crews who are preparing for this event and focusing on protecting critical infrastructure.
Evacuations and Reception Centres will be established at some point today. Notification to the public will be provided. The Flood information line 403-502-8900 will be active by noon.
Already there has been an outpouring of support from the community to assist. A volunteer coordination centre will be established shortly and information will be provided. A phone number will be established by noon today.
