That's great, but who will be judging these submissions? Better not be some conservative bean-counter, or it doesn't matter how good the top submissions are as they won't get picked.

I'm not sure I'm picturing that right, but to me a triangular intersection is the way to go. Pedestrians go in straight lines and the path structure should reflect that. Basically, look at any natural paths that have formed from wear and make those the official paths.
