This is the perfect time to load up on young players and let them get a ton of ice time over the next couple years. Of course you want a few vets sprinkled in, and you have to spend enough to at least get to the floor, but this is the time to tear it all all down and start from scratch. Bringing in guys like Horton (or Letang) on a large contract is the last thing the Flames should do. Let another team pay them the huge cash for the next few years and then when the Flames are actually a contender again they can go out and bring in bigger contracts.
Who said anything about a multi-year deal? Horton for $6M on a one-year deal sounds just fine and gives the Flames another asset to trade at the deadline.

Horton for $6M on a two year deal is fine too if he just wants to hang out and help rebuild the team and then trade him in the second year.

The idea is that if the Flames move all the vets out we are not going to make the salary floor. You can't do that with a team full of young players on ELCs.

The only problem I see is if we are relying on Horton to keep us above the cap floor and he gets injured, do we then drop below the floor and get penalized?
