I definitely think they could put a profitable team there. Perhaps not a very strong fanbase but as long as the casinos stay onboard with the plan to direct tourists to the games they should be able to sell out consistently.
The problem would be if something new and shiney showed up, Las Vegas could forget all about hockey in a heartbeat.
I also am not sure how good of a TV contract a team in Vegas would be able to get. The NHL relies pretty heavily on TV revenues doesn't it?

There are no existing teams for major sports in Vegas though, so a new NHL team could be the backbone of a new Regional Sports Network in Nevada. Then everyone in Vegas can pay for the team on their cable bill, whether they want to or not. Done and done. Vegas is right on the cusp in terms of biggest tv markets that don't have a pro sports team, and none of the other ones on the list are anything like vegas.Which of these is not like the others:

41 Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York
