As I've said before, Edwards wants to climb the ranks of the NHL inner/upper circle, taking over that mantle from Harley.
That's why front and centre in the CBA negotiations, and, from that experience directly, worked with Shanhan. I am sure Campbell wasn't far away, and obviously a pal of Bettman's. So it covers off guys that are widely respected and trusted in NHL circles, to be in those circles in the first place, and that gives Edwards some comfort in the hiring...especially if he sees some of the Flames' reputation taking a hit in those same circles, thanks to the results on the ice but more likely, the comedy of errors that were all too public last season in the upper management.
In addition to that, they are obviously good hockey guys, someone that Edwards could figure has that side of things covered (though each have a different level of experience) when it comes to the Flames' current heirarchy.
What about bringing in both of them?
