Agreed, but it happens. If you told me Mackinnon would be the equivalent of Brad Richards in his prime then the deal is intriguing, but this is yet to be determined. There are just too many variables involved to say he will even be the best forward to come from this draft. Barkov, Drouin, Lindholm and maybe even a Monahan, Dome or yet to be named player may turn out to be the most accomplished forward from this draft.
From all appearances this is a year where there are 4 or 5 guys who may ultimately vie for the best forward from this draft class. Mackinnon's history suggests he will be the best, but his body of work does not say he is a generational talent or that he will even be dominant at the NHL level. The team that gets him leaves the draft able to say it appears they have a number one center, nothing more, nothing less.
