Flames DO still have a chance of picking up a franchise player since they get their first pick at 6th, and could perhaps find a steal in the 20s. At worst, Flames should have three very serviceable players that contribute well. That will help them get more post season success than one player can.

For the record, I really, really like MacKinnon, but I am also glad the Avs turned it down.....I'm excited about having three first rounders in whats supposed to be a deep draft.
I also think we'll get a really, really good player at #6, and that we'll be better off in the long run keeping our picks, and taking three solid prospects.
Stil, the deal isn't that much of an over payment that the pitch fork crew needs to be screaming bloody murder over it. If it was, the Avs wouldn't have turned it down.
