One single player doesn't make you a cup contending team though. As Pens (and Islanders) have shown this year, one (or even two) player doesn't mean you'll make it to the final.
Great teams are made with several good players that contribute. And those players generally come from the draft. MacKinnon is a talent for sure, but with how bare Flames cupboard is with top notch prospects, it's better to take advantage of this deep draft and have multiple 1st rounders that could contribute to your team down the road.
