There were other, better, more experienced names available - Davidson and Nill namely. Now either the Flames are so unappealing of a franchise that they can't attract experienced talent and have to resort to wild swings at former inexperienced NHLers or upper level management doesn't have the balls to fix a mistake when they have a chance and continue on with status quo.

I think it depends what Shannahan is brought in to do. If as suggested he is head of hockey ops and is the guy that oversees the Flames big picture and hires a GM to make the day to day/roster/drafting etc. moves I think that could be a good move. But if Shannahan is the guy that will be acting as GM then I think it is a poor move and a big risk.
