IANAD but it sounds like what Pylon had was a sedation pill, which is different than general anesthetic. That type of sedation will leave you conscious for the procedure but you won't remember anything. They usually cause you to become quite loopy and from what I hear results like Pylon's aren't uncommon.
General surgical anesthetic will cause you to become "unconscious" and this is usually administered intravenously. The people who tell stories of trying to fight the anesthesia to stay awake have this type of sedation.
I had my wisdom teeth out about a month ago and underwent general anesthesia, it was a bit pricier but definitely worth it cause I hate having any procedures done on my teeth. I went in at 1145 was knocked completely out and woke up around 130. The nice thing about the GA is that you don't feel loopy after. I was a little disoriented when I first came to, but 10 minutes after that I was feeling pretty good.
If you have any anxiety over going to the dentist I would definitely recommend the general anesthesia, even if it costs slightly more.
