They are competing with tablets, especially for kids. As a parent, I am not going anywhere near a $500 console with $50 games, when a Kindle Fire occupies them pretty well for $180 plus free or $2 games.

You used to be able to justify the price of a ps3 for its abilities as a blu ray and media player, and now you can get way better in both those areas for well under $100.

Seems they have no interest in pricing these for anyone but the hard core gamers, and will probably lose out on the kids market, which is not very good for long term success.
Is it a different time? Those 4k TVs cost as much as a new car. I am sure we'll see a new form of media player that will cost hundreds of dollars in the next few years. If you want to be an early adopter of technology then you pay big money. Hell an iPhone costs more.
