Things were different then. Blu Ray players were 600-1000, a decent hdtv was well over a grand. Even Apple tends to launch their new devices at the same price the current version was, while other manufacturers go cheaper with new and improved versions of popular devices.

They are competing with tablets, especially for kids. As a parent, I am not going anywhere near a $500 console with $50 games, when a Kindle Fire occupies them pretty well for $180 plus free or $2 games.

You used to be able to justify the price of a ps3 for its abilities as a blu ray and media player, and now you can get way better in both those areas for well under $100.

Seems they have no interest in pricing these for anyone but the hard core gamers, and will probably lose out on the kids market, which is not very good for long term success.
