And I know there are a lot of examples of goalies coming in and crapping the bed too, it just seems like after years and years of gifting roster spots to signed veterans rather than letting our own players develop, people still want to see this happen. Makes no sense. Ramo is prime age for a "rookie" goaltender. I want to see how he does.

There's something to be said about having the prospects actually earn their spots rather then needing a franchise to "give" them the spots.
Must be a generation thing, rather then earning your way the next generation just expects it to be given to them. It's not like those prospects that we didn't give a spot to and develop then went on and developed elsewhere... just maybe they weren't good enough and that serviceable veteran signing was the better NHL upside in the end (as little as it was).
