Just caught this thread and thought I would add my two cents.
I worked for a company a few years ago and satellite communications was our business.
I would recommend Iridium. It is the most reliable, best call quality and fair rates. You can buy a pre loaded card with minutes, pay month to month or go on a term plan. There are other less expensive services and hardware out there but are very unreliable and have poor call quality.
Go see Jim or Phil at Infosat Communications here in Calgary and they will be able to set you up probably same day with a phone, plan and Pelican case to store, protect and transport it when not in use.
