At this point, I would only be willing to give up our #6 pick is if it is in a package that lands us MacKinnon. I am not convinced that Barkov is worth #6 + another first round pick but MacKinnon is.
If we can make a deals in this draft I would rather be draft pick buyers over sellers. I wouldn't mind the Flames trying to be creative with the new rules either. If there is a team out there that wants to give the Flames a 1st + a bad contract to buy out.
Perhaps the Flames can target the Flyers? We could make a trade such as:
To Calgary:
Flyers 1st rounder 2013
Flyers 1st rounder 2014
Chris Pronger's cap hit
To Philadelphia:
Flames 7th rounder
I'm still trying to figure out how much cap value is worth but eating $5M per year for 4 years ($20M in cap hit) should be pretty expensive. If the Flyers can get that cap hit relief then they won't have to lose a significant asset while their team is in the sweet spot for having both veterans under contract and young talent on entry level contracts.
Also, if the Flames buyout Pronger then the Flyers would have the option to sign him again for league minimum if he recovers his health.
Then again, Pronger's contract might not be hurting the Flyers as long as he stays on the Injury Reserve. As long as he is on the IR, the insurance pays his salary and his cap hit doesn't count.
Anyway, the point of the example is that the Flames have cap space and two compliance buyouts available to trade for draft picks. I would rather we use them than our other assets, if possible.

The Flyers aren't going to trade two 1st round picks to simply save money. The Flyers are not a financially strapped team - and yes, while Pronger may count against "tagging" in the cap every off-season, once the season begins and he goes on LTIR, it doesn't matter. You can spend 10% over the cap every summer, which effectively erases the tagging problem as well.
Also, you can't buyout an injured player.
