I believe his point is that you can go ahead and interpret all you want, but if you're not a Christian, and other Christians don't subscribe to your interpretation, it's meaningless. That is particularly accurate in the case of something where there is no verifiable right or wrong answer, it comes down to the interpretations of believers to decide what their faith says.
