Is there any merit though to diversifying your assets. Or is it better to just maximize them?
What I mean is, sure it would be great to have all 30 first round draft picks, but if the Flames truly believe that this draft is the kickstart to the foundation of the next generation of the franchise, you don't really want to go all Oilers and just have a bunch of really good young players all within the same age who are certainly talented, but are lost in the wilderness.
If the goal is to contend in 5 years, why not use the assets to make sure that 5 years down the road you have the right mix of players (Elite youth on entry contracts, role players, vets etc etc)
Or do you just hoard every BPA you can and cross that bridge when it comes?
I'm mainly just thinking out loud.
