Is he really trying to make people laugh, or is he making a point that needs to be made? It's like the whole "thoughts and prayers" meme on here for a while, or the endless Facebook "causes" where you click on "like", maybe make a 1 sentence comment, then go back to doing whatever you were doing before you felt that 5 seconds of vague sympathy.
Praying for someone doesn't do jack. If that's all you have, shut up about it, because the only one you're making feel better is yourself for "caring". Less talk, more action.
