Saprykin 1999 #1 pick would be the most prominent Russian the Flames drafted.
He scored the OT goal in game 5 of the SC final putting the Flames 1 win away from the cup.
He had the 30th most games of players drafted in 1999.
He had the 21th most pts
He had the 17th most goals.
This is out of all the players drafted in 1999. Zetterberg, Vrbata, Erat, Kostopolus were drafted in the 7th round that year and were ahead of Saprykin in all 3 categories
.... so as a first rounder he fit very close to where he was drafted.
By your logic the Flames should avoid players in the CHL... Pelech, Nemicz, Krahn and Irving.... Along with BCHL Chucko. If these picks had been as good as the Russian pick there would not have been a 4 year playoff drought.
If Nichushkin is really in the top 5 talented players in the 2014 draft years he will play in the NHL..... If he is a journey man or a second tier player he will go back and play in the KHL for more money than he can get in the AHL.
Just because as a 17 year old he is chasing the money doesn't make him a prima donna. Hard to tell if he is a driver in his situation or the victim.
Read Jamie Mclennan's book on his experience in the KHL and you would have to wonder how anyone with a chance to play in the AHL would chose the KHL.....Outside of the $.
As for him currently playing in the KHL..... Lindholm has committed to playing next year in the SEL..... only difference is that the KHL is a better league.

Nichushkin has two years remaining on a three-year pact he originally signed with Traktor and reports have circulated in Russian media his 2013 salary could reach $2 million. He would have to buy out the next two seasons in order to leave Dynamo.
Team president Arkady Rotenberg, meanwhile, refuted the $2-million rumors on Wednesday but declined to reveal Nichushkin’s salary.
“There are no crazy salaries [on Dynamo],” Rotenberg told R-Sport. “The salaries on Dynamo are pretty moderate, compared to other KHL clubs.”

PS... there will be players drafted after the Flames picks ... some in later rounds that will be better players than the top 6 18 year olds at this point in time.
