It's not just a catholic protestant thing, it's a "you occupied my country for 100's of years and left us to eat grass and starve" thing. You don't understand or you wouldn't write it off as something as simple as religious differences.

I think that one could make an effective argument that many of the recent bombings and other terrorist like activities are not tied primarily to religion but rather to a perceived view of oppression of their native land and citizenry by western powers.
