I removed sod to build my garage, and had the bobcat take off the sod. If I ever had to do that again I would rent a sod cutter and take off the sod, and then have the bobcat take off the top layer of dirt.

Leaving that much dirt attached to the sod make it that much harder to work with, and increased the dump fees considerably. Dirt with sod attached is considered "organic" and charged at the full ~$100 per tonne. Plain dirt is "clean fill" and depending on the person running the scale was either the dump minimum of $15 or free.

Unless of course you can get Brian to quote you on doing the work as well as hauling the waste away.
