Our back lawn is healthy but very bumpy and uneven (I'm told the previous owners had a dog and they simply put the sod on top without leveling the dirt underneath

). Looks good but not that good to play on (especially for toddlers).
I was thinking of renting a sod cutter to pull up the existing lawn, levelling with loam and/or soil, and then putting the sod back. However, I'm not sure that will actually work so I may just bite the bullet and re-sod entirely.
