He does play a similar game to Jay Bouw. However his slapshot is considerably better and thus you'll expect him to be much more of a threat from the point on the powerplay than Bouwmeester is. But yes, Jones is a 2-way, puck rushing defenseman with tremendous reach and great skating. He's not a big hitter at all and doesn't physically impose on others. Disagree with those who say he dominates due to his size, that isn't the case at all. His game is based around skating, puckhandling, reach, passing and shooting and not around his being bigger or stronger than others.
All that said it was clear that many around here underrated Bouwmeester because of his salary, his weak point shot and his lack of physical play. He was a very effective defenseman here. But the same people that didn't like Bouwmeester would probably be critical of Jones for similar reasons.
If the Flames were picking #1 I'd rather have MacKinnon that's for sure and I'd be tempted to take Barkov over him as well. Despite the rarity of right handed #1 defensemen I'd go with the potential franchise centre.
My top 4:
1. MacKinnon
2. Barkov
3. Jones
4. Drouin
I think the top 4 or so guys are so close that you really can draft by position or any other particular criteria you want to emphasize. I just love MacKinnon's speed, competitiveness, skill, tenacity, etc.
