Canada hosting the World Cup would be ridiculous essentially on almost all fronts.
We're ranked 80th in the world, behind such powerhouses like Uzbekistan, Sierra Leone and Equitorial Guinea. I suppose the only reason we'd be a viable candidate is economic power and being a nice country, and I suppose it's probably the only way in hell Canada ever qualifies for World Cup anyway (I think we've qualified like once or twice in history and that largely is due to our soft pool, pretty sure we've never won a game at World Cup).
It would be sort of a slap in the face to the rest of the world that actually like, you know, cares about the sport (sorry to the few of you here that do...).
It'd sort of be like if the Dominican Republic was awarded the Winter Olympics.

Whether Canada's ranking in soccer plays a role or not, you are completely correct in saying all this World Cup talk has derailed the thread (and I'm not innocent in that). But the think any sort of Canadian World Cup bid is having any sort of serious impact on the Flames arena / multi sport facility plans is pretty ridiculous. Any funding or costs incurred on a long shot bid for the World Cup would be ridiculous by Flames management and government alike.
NHL hockey, concerts, CFL football and maybe a long term plan for some form of professional soccer are likely all that's being thought of at the most.
