But if it is the Star manufacturing this, then why was it a reporter for Gawker who make the existence of the video public?

The Star hadn't published anything, even though, according to their report, they saw the video 2 weeks ago.

So the Star is tipped about the video, sees it, sits on it for 2 weeks. Meanwhile Gawker gets offered the video, a reporter flies up to see it, and then reports what he saw.

Then the Star publishes the story they have been preparing.

So unless Gawker is somehow working with The Star, it was Gawker who spilled the beans then The Star rushed out what they already had.

Incidentally, Gawker has started an Indiegogo campaign to purchase the video.
