I have heard that for fluoride to be effective, it needs to be applied topically for longer than 30 seconds. This would include brushing your teeth or having it at the dentist. Simply drinking water and letting it pass through your mouth wouldn't do anything. Makes sense to me but since I have no link, just an opinion.
