Cola on the bench is actually fairly common. Most NHL locker rooms have flat (they don't drink it with the carbonation as they would pretty much vomit it up shortly after) cola in the coolers and the guys are drinking it between periods as the sugar and caffiene gives them a little boost and fights fatigue. Essentially used no differently then smelling salts during the game. Not everyone does it, not everyone does it every night. But its there. It's also not uncommon to see it handed out at marathons or any other high endurance sort of activity where participants need a little sugar to replenish what they have lost and maybe a little caffiene to keep them going.
