I used to wear Doc Marten boots with my culottes on my mail route.. Years ago I also wore a nose ring or stud.
Anyway, my route then was in a wealthy Jewish subdivision. With my blond hair and blue eyes and boots I must have brought up bad memories .
As ridiculous as it may sound, a group of residents grilled me about my ancestry. My family is from Belgium and Holland, primarily Rotterdam. My great grandfather hid Jews under the big pipe organ in his church.
Long story short-nothing I said would satisfy this group. It was horrific to see the numbers tattooed on their arms and feel their rage.
So why did they do this? In the next town there was a large, increasingly violent group of young Neo Nazis who sported blond hair, nose rings, and Docs. They wouldn't believe I wasn't one of them. So I quit the route as it was too much.
I know it sounds melodramatic and unlikely but it really did happen.
This is South Florida after all.
I know a guy who has a small role in that movie Pain and Gain which is based on events that happened in Miami.
I think I'll side with the real-life victim and not pay to see it, as it is kinda sick to make a comedy of the situation.
