This is my family's dilemma too.
Last year my birthday was on Mother's Day. Typically, I don't ask for stuff - I have plenty of stuff. I'm happy enough to go for a drive west to the big rock piles and have lunch at our favorite pub in Banff, that sort of thing, with the whole crew involved. That has gotten a little bit harder now that the kids are adults and so many different schedules are involved, but that's my favorite thing to do.
