No doubt that the contract is the reason there hasn't been a trade, but the "contract sucks" talk is disengenous. He is being paid a boatload of money in a format that was in contravention of the spirit of salary cap, if not the letter. Luongo, his agent and the GM are the authors of their own situation. I think the real reason why he is stuck though is that the Canucks are trying to land a big reward in trading him away and there are too many constraints on the situation to let Gillis be so greedy.
1) Gillis gave Luongo a monster contract, eliminating a lot of teams that cannot afford that contract
2) Gillis gave Luongo a NTC, allowing the player to restrict the teams that can even be negotiated with
3) Gillis gave Schneider starting goalie $$ too and put his team in Cap Hell and forcing the need for this trade to happen
Once Gillis realizes the reality of his situation, I think he will be trying to send Luongo to Florida for nothing. If Florida is smart they will put him over a barrel and make him pay for his mistakes because otherwise they probably do not want to commit to Luongo with Markstrom coming up.
