A great day trip would be to the Borromean Islands on Lago Maggiore. You take a bigger ferry to the main island and then you can hop on small boats between the other two. One island is mainly a large villa, the other an elaborate garden and the third is a little fishing village. Just can't remember if you can take a ferry from the Swiss side or if you have to cross over into Italy. Either way worth spending a day there.
