Hybrid is good on gravel, grass, dirt etc. You can get wider tires with more aggressive tread that gives you more grip. I have both and the only thing I find 'challenging' is getting used to the riding position on the rare occasions I pull out the hybrid because I put so many miles on the road bike in comparison.
