This year's draft apparently has similar depth ton 2003 when the Ducks grabbed Getzlaf at 19 and Perry at 28.

Plus in that 2003 draft, the 20 to 30 picks resulted in guys like Perry, Kesler, Burns, Richards, and 4 other NHL regulars.

I don't think the Ducks are where they are now if they only picked up Getzlaf alone or traded both their picks for a top 5 to draft Erice Staal or Nathan Horton.

I could see trading the low firsts to move up in a weak draft but guys like Compher, Gauthier, Dauphin, Petan, etc could be as good if not better than the top of the class. You just never know with development.
I don't think this draft is considered as deep as 2003 but that aside I agree with your assessment completely.

The Flames don't need one piece they need a few, and this is a great chance to start that. If they get a bonafide top line player with their first pick they could come up with only two bottom roster player with their second two picks, but even at that they've gained assets and prospect depth.

They could however do as you say and get two pieces out of this draft to build a decade of franchise around.

I'd rather they take the picks, or even move down with the lower of the two and get two seconds.
