Not really an analogous situation. The Flames pinnacle of regular season success was in 05-06 where they finished 7th in the league. That's where the Canucks finished this year, in what people are calling a down year.
Perhaps their playoff fortunes will turn out to be similar, but comparing any iteration of the Flames in the last 20 years to the Canucks team of recent years really flatters the Flames.
It wasn't long ago (really just a matter of weeks) that people were calling San Jose washups.
