Thne Maher was just as wrong. "Police state" and "military occupation" along with words like "communism" are words that americans (and others) often throw around as if they were cliches with no real understanding with what those things ACTUALLY look like.
Should also note some further updates (my internet isn't great right now so I'm having troubles grabbing the links. I'll try to remember to update them later).
-story seems to be rounding out a bit about the older brother. It appears he had regular contact with a jihadist while in Russia. He also had contact with one of the canadian jihadists killed in africa who also happened to be a boxer. He seemed to be trying to use these two as the introduction he needed to become a full fledged member of these groups. When both these individuals were killed he lost that introduction and in a short day trip back to Russia not to long ago it seems he may have been turned away from the group (lacking the right people in his corner). Can't help but think he was going to prove something to these groups to get "in" with them.
-also smells to me like the parents while perhaps not jihad members had some sympathy to that cause. The mom seems extremely influential over the pair and the oldest brother.
