Yes, there is. Teams play for them. Because a point is awarded it is better to play conservative and get that point than open up, assume risk, and play aggressively for the win.
The only thing that will work to eliminate this shoot out and tie garbage is to eliminate the loser points. Two points for a regulation win. One point for an OT win. Zero points for anything else. You only get rewarded for winning, and rewarded the most for winning in regulation. Get rid of the phony points for almost being competitive. The NHL won't do this though. They love the phony equality they have built into the system.
