Sure, and I don't think anyone has a problem with SUV owners who actually go off-roading or tow heavy loads or use their vehicles in situations like what you described. The reason SUV drivers are reviled is because the vast majority of them only use their over-sized urban assault vehicle for commuting and city/highway driving on paved roads.
