a player can technically be released, but it requires the player to breach their contract. If the Canucks waived Luongo and demoted him (which they can because he has a NTC and not a NMC), then Luongo refused to report, at that point the Canucks could void the contract.
Redden was obviously willing to report to the AHL so the Rangers had no grounds to void the contract. I think Gomez too would report, so the Habs wouldn't be able to either.
Luongo however I think would refuse to report.
