Weeeeeell I hate to break it to you, but that $25 checked fee baggage thing?

Yeah, it's coming to Westjet too, soon. And the rationale (allegedly... I heard this second hand from an employee so take that for what it's worth) is that the American carriers all charge the fee and pass the fee onto the airline, so because sometimes of transfers through the States, etc. Westjet wants the consumer to pick up the potential cost. Also- probably the explanation as to why AC does it but yes, very annoying.

Not quite as annoying as anytime somebody has a complaint about a cost of service kinda thing and then the heroes of CP all login to tell that person to stop being a cheapskate and that "everyone wants something for free"- but annoying nonetheless.

As for me, I find both Canadian airlines essentially the same. I don't see any big differences and flying in general in Canada, like everything else, is a rip off and overpriced and you feel like you're being gouged in most instances. Flying really has little to do with distance and true cost, or at least that is what my experience is.

I once had to fly back from Germany, it was cheaper to get a return ticket than a one way. How does that make sense in any world?
