if we take today's standings and assume that no one wins the lottery, my guess would be:
# 1 - Florida: D Seth Jones
Too good and too much of a building block to pass.
# 2 - Colorado: C/RW Nathan MacKinnon
Tough choice. What they'd really need is Jones, but if they plan to use MacKinnon on the wing like some scouts suggest, a Landeskog-Duchene-MacKinnon line would be pretty neat.
# 3 - Tampa Bay: LW Jonathan Drouin
A no-brainer if Jones and MacKinnon are gone. They don't have a glaring need at the center position with Stamkos and Lecavalier, but a skilled LW like Drouin makes a lot of sense.
# 4 - Nashville: C Aleksander Barkov
They don't need Barkov immediately IF he has to stay over there because of military service (I'm not sure if he has to), as they have two veterans in Fisher and Legwand. Wilson+Barkov down the middle is solid going forward.
# 5 - Carolina: RW Valeri Nishushkin
Outside of Semin and Skinner, the Hurricanes don't have quality wingers. They have locked up a Russian primadonna to a long-term contract, maybe they'd take a flyer on another one?
# 6 - Edmonton Coilers: D Darnell Nurse
Don't know if MacTavish and his scouts see it that way, but that's what they need, anyway.
# 7 - Calgary Flames: C Elias Lindholm
The Flames have the choice between him and Monahan in this scenario. Both look very solid going forward and you probably can't go wrong with either one of them. I like Lindholm slightly more, so he gets the nod in this scenario.
# 8 - Philadelphia Flyers: D Rasmus Ristolainen
They already have very good and young center depth, so they pass on Monahan. They lack a good prospect on the blue line and could need a puck-moving defenseman, as Timonen doesn't get younger and Carle is gone. Therefore, they go with Ristolainen.
# 9 - Buffalo Sabres: C Sean Monahan
They already have good center depth, but given that they have two first rounders, they can afford to go BPA here and Monahan is too good to pass up at this point.
#10 - New Jersey Devils: D Nikita Zadorov
Zidlicky, Salvador and Tallinder are all in their mid 30s, and in addition to Larsson and Merrill, this gives the Devils a great foundation on the blueline.
