South Park's episode "Go God Go" was pretty brilliant, and I'd suggest everyone watch it. For real life examples, just look at any political system through history. The moment one's enemies are defeated, new trouble starts from within. It could be Leninist vs. Stalinist, Red Coats vs. Blue Coats, Serbs vs. Croats, etc... It doesn't really matter.

Yup. Competition for resources is the fundamental base for all conflicts. Human constructs, such as; race, religion, etc..., are just the ways we divide our teams. If neither of those things existed, we would still have the same conflicts going on as we'd still find way to separate ourselves from others. It's hardwired into our nature.
People who focus on religion as the basis of war and terrorism are fighting a meaningless side battle.
