In it's most basic form, you take a baguette, cut it in half, cover each half with mushrooms and cheese, stick it in the oven until the baguette is crispy and the cheese is melted and then you put on some ketchup and chives. Most people make their own variations of it however and some of them are absolutely amazing.

Usually the good ones have different types of meat that are added in between the cheese and mushrooms before cooking and then, like the one in that pic, they add different combinations of veggies and dressing depending on the type.

My personal favorite was a spicy variation that I believe had some grounded peppers with the mushrooms as well as spicy sausage, cheese and it was absolutely slathered in spicy ketchup.

I specifically mentioned the jewish quarter in Krakow cause they have little building in the square that has about 5 or 6 seperate zapiekanka vendors, all with different variations and styles. Extremely tasty but really busy.
