Crowdsourcing crime scenes can be something to expect more commonly in the future. It's really not that different than police going to the public for tips. This is the sort of stuff you have to expect when everyone is connect digitally and the power of the Internet takes hold. Not much the authorities can do other than work with what is turned up. There is the chance it may help, and also the chance that it may hinder. Either way, it's happening.
