If I had a big backpack in a crowd that large, I wouldn't wear it on my back, for a few reasons:
1. Wearing it on my back would be inconsiderate of others around me, taking up more space than necessary, and because it's large and awkward and sticking off my back, it would greatly increase the chance that the slightest movement by me would end up smacking someone with the backpack. I'm sure we've all been on a crowded train or bus where someone was wearing a backpack knocking into people every time they moved.
2. In a large crowd there's a greater chance of pickpockets who might open the backpack without my noticing and remove my valuables from inside because I wouldn't be able to see them do it.
3. The counterpoint to #1. The backpack throws off your centre of balance, and when someone is a jerk who's wearing a backpack in a thick crowd, other jerks (like me) will use the backpack to throw the person off-balance as a not-so-subtle way to tell them to take it off. It doesn't take a lot of force to push someone around when they have 10 pounds of crap hanging off their back.
